SSH/SFTP Access

 SSH File and Shell Access

Some jobs require direct access to files stored on W3C TAG servers, or shell access to install or configure software. For example, updating content on a static website, or installing a custom web application.

Such access is avaialable, but due to security concerns is limited to those users that really require it.

Requesting Access

Please request shell access through your manager, and include the following information:

  1. Your W3C TAG username, e.g. sarah.
  2. The activity/access being requested, e.g. website content, website configuration, root access, etc.

You shouldn’t request root access unless your activities actually require it. Root privileges grant write-access to configuration files that are managed by Startup Stack (such files usually contain a “Startup Stack Managed” comment). User modifications to such managed files may cause configuration and security issues. Further, such edits will not be permanent, and will get overwritten eventually.
Repairing mis-configuration or security vulnerabilities introduced by a user with root access will incur additional charges.
